Theme

Human rights defenders and the current backlash against human rights.

Synopsis of the Documentary

The documentary The Long Haul examines the important role of human rights defenders, especially younger ones, in responding to the current backlash against human rights occurring worldwide. The documentary was made to inspire young people to engage in human rights through the legacy of Sir Nigel Rodley, one of the principal architects of the international human rights framework. Sir Nigel dedicated his life to encouraging intergenerational efforts to be taken towards human rights advocacy.  His acute awareness that progress throughout the world is a long haul continues to hold truth.

Filmmaker Victor Fokke and Nadja Houben, director of Human Rights in the Picture, turned their extensive interview with Sir Nigel Rodley in 2014 into a documentary. The film was made possible with financial support from the University of Essex, the International Bar Association, the Urban Morgan Institute for Human Rights and many private donors and NGOs worldwide.
